Milk Thistle Offers Many Possible Benefits

Milk -thistle _80x 80With its tall, spiny stems and toothed, thorny leaves, the milk thistle hardly looks inviting. But this plant has been used for hundreds of years as a remedy to various health issues.

Native to the Mediterranean regions of North Africa, Europe and the Middle East, milk thistle is now found throughout the world, including North America. Two species are classified under the milk thistle: the silver milk thistle, or ivory thistle, and the blessed milk thistle. Milk thistle extract is one of Protandim's five ingredients. You may see this plant in fields or in forests. And you may be surprised what possible benefits come from it.

For centuries, the milk thistle has been referred to as "liver tonics." Studies of the plant's medical uses have been conducted since the 1970s in many countries. And though these studies have been uneven, the plant has been reported to have protective effects on the liver.

Studies are still under way regarding the effects of milk thistle on the liver. If you or your child has liver problems, consult you physician. Also, women who are pregnant or nursing should not take milk thistle on its own.

Long-Used, Much-Studied Turmeric a key Protandim Ingredient

TurmericWhen you first learned of Protandim, you probably researched to find out its ingredients. Some--maybe all--of these ingredients were new to you even though they've been used in other parts of the world for centuries.

One of Protandim's five botanical ingredients is turmeric extract. Turmeric is a perennial plant of the ginger family Zingiberaceae. It grows in southern Asia, most specifically in India where it thrives in warm, humid temperatures and abundant rainfall.

Turmeric has been used in Chinese herbal medicine and by natives of India for more than 2,500 years, possibly much longer. The list of health conditions turmeric may help to alleviate is impressive. Research suggests it may be helpful for the following conditions:

  • Indigestion
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Heart Disease
  • Bacterial and viral infections
  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer's disease

On its own, Turmeric is a weak Nrf2 activator; however, when it is combined with the other ingredients in the specially designed formulation, Protandim is a powerful Nrf2 synergizer.

Turmeric is also used to color cheeses, popcorn, cake icings, cereal, yogurt, dry mixes, salad dressings, margarine, mustard and chicken broth. It has also been used in India for wedding and religious ceremonies.

Scientists continue to study the effects and benefits of turmeric. You can enjoy its benefits along with those of four other ingredients in Protandim.
